"Don't judge a book by its cover."
Basically, the theme revolves around how the characters act differently when they are alone and when they are being watched. It has to do with pride (Caesar acting strong and like a man in the presence of the Senate by not listening to a "mere" woman) and deception (Caesar's refusal of the crown shows humility in theeyes of the citizens) mostly. But you can also use it to see how the characters are different from one another.
Cassius, for example, is described by Caesar as having no private life. This means that Cassius pours all of his time and energy into crafting a public image—brings up the question of why would he do that? Caesar believes it is for power (and Caesar is right, too).
Brutus has a public and private self dominated by honor and justice. From the way he speaks to the public to his treatment of his wife, he has the most similar public and private selves.
Chickens, also.

I thought it was more of like how the public sees that person and how the actual person sees him/herself. So for Caesar, it was that although the public sees him as a modest and humble ruler, in his mind he's only thinking about having more power and becoming a dictator, putting on a show to trick the people who see him. So he has a different public and private self. But for Brutus, he is seen as a man of honor and actually is a man of honor. I dunno, I might have understood ms boyd wrong about when she talked about this. but i hope i'm correct

Wow, nice connection Kevin. Well, I think Kevin said pretty much all. But I will say in my own word so I can put it on discussion board like this.
Anyway, private self is like your real character I think. Like when you are with your family or friends. You are being your true self and show your true feelings. But public self is characteristic that you want to show to people in general or characteristic you display in public. It's like you have double personality or two faces. Julius Caesar's public self is brave and arrogant man. But in his private self, he is a weak person who is scared of omens. But in Brutus's case, he doesn't really have distinct private and public self.
I think that is pretty much all.

Public self is how Caesar wants to be seen in public, while Private self is what Caesar actually is. In public, he acts all nice and brave and perfect, but when he is by himself, he is not. So, that is what public vs. private self means... i think... haha

As other has mentioned, private self is the actual self of a character but a public self is a fake self that one creates for the public to see. Caesar, in public, is humble for refusing the crown three times, acting if he "doesn't" want power and so valiant that he doesn't fear anything and ignores his wife. His private self would be the opposite. Brutus and Caesar, in fact, disregarded their wives' opinions for ambition and honor, which public self has overwhelmed the private self. It's basically dealing with the "two-face" that a person has.

Private self is the hidden side that the character doesn't want the public to see and the public self is a fake image to show what you want to show to the public. So far, we can often see Caesar's private and public self through his actions and decisions. He act like a humble and triumphant and confident leader in front of the public, which i think is an important characteristic for a ruler. The commoners need an idol to cheer and bring their hopes up. on the other hand, Caesar's private self isn't as bright. He often fears of people around him taking away his power.

Private self is what he truly feels and what he really is as a person and public self is what he tries to portray in front of the people.

Caesar's private life is very different from his public life. Caesar acts all cool and famous in front of people of Rome, he wants to look strong and tough infront of everyone even infront of his own wife. In private life Caesar actually listens to his wife and even takes her advices. But when it all mixes up he chooses public image.

private life vs. public shows how Caesar is different in two ways. In public, he wants to be shown as a brave, and strong person while by himself, he is not. He doesn't want to show his weak parts.

Everyone mentioned pretty much everything.. So I guess I'll be reapeating them. Basically, publicself is a fake version of you that is created by the fact that you want to be shown as a better person than the person you actually are. Privateself is basically you. To make this easier, women waring makeup - publicself. women without makeup - privateself. (there is no offense at all, it is only for some people)

The public self is something that you are in front of other people to make you seem an awesomer person. For example, Caesar wants to play the role of the victorious general about to take the throne. To make him a larger presence in the public eye, he turns his arrogance up to eleven. The private self is something you are when you're alone. This self contains all the things you'd rather keep to yourself, thing's that'll make you seem weak. This one is most definitely your real self.

Public self is what a person portrays himself as in front of people and private self is what the person really is and what he portrays himself as in front of the people close to him.

Private self is the own thoughts/feeling of the person and public self is not truly the own thoughts/feelings of the person

private self is your own ideas. Just same as the true feeling that when you see the grotesque person, you think he is very ugly, you don't want to see his face. But when you talk with him, you just act like you don't care anything, the person is not that ugly. Public can saying that how the other people looks you, and how the other people would think about yourself. Easily, many people really cares about how the other people think about me. So they act really kind to others, and something like that. I think you can understand if you think the real face as the private, and mask for the public
