I think the quote means that you shouldn't change your mind or get swayed by other people around you. You should stay true to yourself and your decisions. Just like when the conspirators asked Caesar to free Cimber, he said no because he already told the whole crowd that he is not going to free Cimber and he should keep his promise to make people have faith in him as a leader who keeps his words.

I think the main characters in the story are transendentalist because they follow their own instincts rather than listening to others wich the citizens tend to do.
