Hello people! I know it's spring break but still, we have to post something on this discussion board right? Well, I'm reading Escape from Camp 14 and I think that Shin is a very interesting person. He was born and raised inside this camp, he was brainwashed and taught by the guards in the exact method that the North Korea government wants but then he suddenly changed his mind and escaped the camp. He must have lots of guts to do this right?
If I were Shin, I would not dare to escape cause I know that I will just die. There is no way I can escape from that camp. With the electrical wires surrounding the camp and guards that are protected every single area of the camp. If you get caught, you will even get shot in the head or torture in ways that I don't even want to imagine it. It's not worthy.
I was just wondering, If you were Shin, would you try to escape?

I'm still half way reading the book, so I still don't know how Shin escaped from the Camp 14, but if I were Shin, I would also not try to escape from the camp because even in the night, guards are looking and there are electrical wires surrounding the camp. It would be dangerous if I touch the wires and if I get caught, I would be executed right away.

I really agree with you Sorn. I don't have any courage or eagerness to do so. As most of you know, I am very lazy person. So I wouldn't even dream about escaping since I really hate walking and walking and running and stuff. I also wouldn't even dare to do so. I don't want to risk my life to do that. I would rather choose to live in a camp. I am no a risky person, so I get scared or easily get worried if I put something on risk, like my life. Also if you get caught, you can be tortured to death. Which really scares me is pain.
Also how can you believe Park was true about outside world? He could been lying or he deceitfully planned escape and snitch on Shin for more food and less work like how Shin snitched on his family? I wouldn't believe what Park says and I would rather snitch on him for talking about outside world and luring him to escape. If I were Shin, I could have gotten lots of food out of one this snitch. And since I would have no information of outside camp, I wouldn't dare to. Also if I were Shin, I will live my life in darkness even though I succeed in escaping because I don't know when the North Korean guards come and kidnap me and bring me to North Korea again. If that happens, like, I am screwed! So I don't think I would escape if I were Shin.

I too will not escape from the camp because it is too risky. But, if I wasn't afraid and had the guts like Shin, I totally would try to escape because dying in the camp is the same as dying while trying to escape. I would rather have a little bit of hope to live a better life than live in the camp, guaranteeing that you would die in there.

I guess it really depends on my surrounding conditions. Shin was very different from the other inmates because he was able to encounter with the outside world through the man at the underground prison and Park, his co-worker at the textile factory. He got to know the world which made a crucial role it making him realize how wretched the labor camp really is. If it weren't for these influences, he wouldn't have known what freedom is. For me, if I was Shin and was lucky enough to have known what the outside world is like, then I would have tried to escape. I would now know that life in the camp is not worth living and therefore decide that it would be better to escape or at least die trying rather than spend my life in the labor camp working for the messed up North Korean government. But as always, this is just an assumption so I'll never really know if I'll have the guts to do so. I wish I do though

Just like Luke mentioned, i agree that it depends on my surrounding conditions. Also, most importantly, if i hadnt met park, i woudnlt dare to escape either. He often mentioned in the book that nobody, includin him, dare to even thinkin of escaping the camp. Especially after his mom and brother thing happened, i think he learned some lessons abt escapin the camp, which made him not even thinkin about it. So i guess ot depnds.

The reason why Shin decided to escape is because of Uncle and Park. They gave information about the outside world, which Shin would never know. Such information were like a dream for Shin. With some more support from Park, Shin decided to escape.
For me, i will escape. Life in the prison is worthless. I'd rather die at the electrical fence then living in misery. With so much motivation from Park, escaping is the only answer.

So far really enjoying this book and I really feel like Shin is a true brave, courageous man. If I was Shin I would definitely try and escape. We all know how we are treated in Camp 14 and how the guards treat the people ("prisoners") I would escape and tell the world what a cruel place N. Korea is and also we should just bomb that place without even a notice. I swear right now I just want to bomb that stupid, cruel, useless place up and kill the Kim family and have each N. Korea people stab Kim jeong eun and also the corpse of Kim Jong Il and his father.

well, I think I didn't try to escape if i was alone. But because there were Park and any other people go escape with Shin, I think i would try with them only because they are going with me. In addition, I don't think I could survive like Shin because I'm really unlucky lol

I would definitely try to escape. Shin did not know about the outside world and so doesn't a alot of other prisoners. The stories of the outside world made him eager to escape and if i knew how crappy the camp was compared to the outside world i would escape no matter what the consequences are.

Yess! I would escape or at least try to escape, I don't want to live in that way . I'd rather die than living with such a burden and lies and all of that..

Well it's worth trying, he would die in the camp anyways, he would at least try to escape and die. But if I was him, I wouldn't even try because Im lazy!

I would probably try to escape because living in the camp is already like a torture, you cant do anything there and your life is just wasted like nothing. There is still little chance of successful escape, i would try to escape or just die trying.
