To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment. -Ralph Waldo Emerson That's the same guy that said the quote, "Foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds" which Ms. Boyd taught us while we were reading Julius Caesar. I think the quote that I posted above is a great example that reflects transcendentalists and their idea. Being yourself in a world full of propaganda and annoying persuasions is probably the hardest things we have to overcome in life. Because it's so hard, it's going to be our greatest accomplishment. That's what I think What do you guys think about this quote and the idea of transcendentalism? Did you guys find any quotes as well?? I want to hear your thoughts!

“When you're the only sane person, you look like the only insane person.” ― Criss Jami I agree with you, Yeajin. It is absolutely hard to being youself in this world. As the above quote, if you act not like the majority you are a weirdo and they will think you're crazy. Sometimes, you follow the crowed's idea even you don't agree with that.

"I learned this, at least, by my experiment: that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he had imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours." - Henry David Thoreau
You know, something that jumped to my mind was the realization that what we were doing in Ms. Saretsky's homeroom had something really similar to the above quote. Unexpected success can jump at you provided you keep trying.
Frankly, it's disappointing. If you keep trying, you increase your exposure to potential friends and enemies, and since you likely make more friends than enemies, you increase the chances of "suddenly" finding success.
And on insanity, I have only this to add: "When one person suffers from a delusion, it is called insanity. When many people suffer from a delusion it is called a Religion." - Robert M. Pirsig

¡°It is easy in the world to live after the world's opinion; it is easy in solitude to live after our own; but the great man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude.¡± -Ralph Waldo Emerson
I think that this quote means that we should never lose our roots (refers to ideas). Everyone should be different from others and not get influenced by popular culture. Overall, it means that people should be independent. I think that we should at least see how society goes on because living in a society not like a majority makes us like people who are not flexible.

I will write a quote by Emily Dickinson. I think other class has learned about her and Horace today as well. They both wrote Transcendentalistic poems. For example, we read a poem called 'Much Madness is divine' by Emily Dickinson and 'Seize the Day' by Horace. Even though they are the writers in totally different places and totally different time period, they were both 'follow your instinct' person. I found it cool that people from very different period could write similar themes like this.
The quote I chose is 'Much Madness is divinest Sense' by Emily Dickinson. You guys can find this quote in the worksheet Ms. Boyd gave us. I thought this quote was outstanding because it perfectly fits in our theme and also this quote explains that following your instinct, which is madness here, is actually giving you good judgements.
I think being a transcendentalist is a hard thing; we are attracted to like things. We are attracted toward what people usually do rather than unusual thing, since we care about what others might think. I don't really know about it yet since we didn't go through the whole thing, but I am sure being a transcendentalist is hard.

I think as a transcendentalist is hard whether which times. A new idea always provoke debate and reform too many years. I think this is reason why the people be famous after they dead. Whenever the transcendentalist is hard to prove themselves.

Well I agree with Horace's poem that encourages us to live our life to the fullest cause we never know when we are going to die. Life is shorter than everyone thinks and we should all be aware of death. Don't worry too much about the future and just enjoy your present to the fullest so that you won't regret it later.

I THINK that trying to be others isn't necessarily "bad" because there's potential improvement that you can make by picking out what others have done so great in their lives. Without those people in this world, I don't think incentives and motivations don't exist. Therefore, people would only have to rely on solely on themselves and their limits.

I agree with you stating yourself your points when everyone is against you is pretty big accomplishments. We probably have never been in situation where we can lose our minds just because people dont agree or dislike us. Instead just focus on yourself dont let other people distract you by their opinions.

"It is easy in the world to live after the world's opinion." This is in Self-Reliance written by Ralph Waldo Emerson. I wrote this because it is very related to the transcendentalism. I think it's obvious but, the quote is saying that it's easy to follow after the society or follow the majority. Also, if you're alone, it's easy to follow your own instinct. I guess everythin about this quot related to transcendentalism.

From Horace's poem Seize the Day: "trim your hopes to fit your limits"
Despite it basically telling us to limit our dreams, I kind of liked this quote. First of all it's very practical. Unlike most poetry, which is basically endless lines of jibber-jabber. And second of all, it only applies to teens and adults. You can't just go around telling kids that their dream of supporting themselves while being ballerinas or astronauts is impossible.
When you're an adult, you realize that not everything is possible, you need to focus on one reachable goal, since you're more likely to succeed. I realize that that quote has nearly nothing to do with Seizing the Day, but I have found one small thing.
Trimming your hopes and dreams means that you focus on one thing in life, and don't waste time on useless things that'll hinder you from your path of happiness. That's what I think.
