prezi.com/xa2schrrzbto/the-diameter-of-the-bomb/Author: Yehuda Amichai
1924-2000
Born in Wrzburg, Germany
Jewish
Escaped to Palestine (modern day Israel) because of Nazi Germany’s Jewish Holocaust
Palestine was controlled by England: He and other Jews should fight for England in WWII
Involved in Israeli Independence Movement
Fought in Arab-Israeli War of 1948
History of Israel
Jews were persecuted 2000 years ago (refer to Bible)
Persecuted by Arabians and Nazi Germany
Independence Movement started
Arab countries disagreed independence (violence started at this point mostly by Palestine Arabians)
Independence declared (only the area where many Jews live; area that is not declared independent is called Palestine)
Arab-Israeli War of 1948 occurred on the day the independence was declared
Israel won
Additional wars occurred and Israel won; Arab countries decided not to attack Israel again
Critics:
The author probably hates Israel’s response toward enemy:
Hezbollah and Hamas (terrorist groups) made to attack Israel
Settle on south and east of Israel; terrorized Israel
Israeli soldiers crossed the border to kill terrorists but it ended up in killing civilians (because they attacked civilian village)
A result of responding violently to attacks and acting before the attack
Does not have persuasive persuasions that can justify its actions
Even though Israel tries to maintain peace, its revenge to Palestine is criticized all over the world
Society:
Since Israel has lots of conflicts, men and women go to military service
One thing we misunderstand about Israel is that Israeli soldiers are not patriotic and don’t want to fight for their country
Too much conflict made Israeli do something to avoid military service
Even though they’re enlisted, crimes occur within military bases (such as sexual abuse, murdering of military commanders, drug abuse, escaping, etc.)
Plot: refer to prezi
Significance:
The impact of war is so large that it not only affects people within war but also ones who are outside war zone (such as a person who is outside a war zone lost a friend who was killed in war)
Mental pains greatly increase damage of war
Disagrees war
Revenge brings bigger damage
Going to army is hard (we feel it will be fun but once we go there it’s not)
Death is never fun (no matter what kind of death it is)
Perfect soldiers never exist (soldiers don’t like to fight but have to)
Other stuffs:
Major themes: negative consequence of war
Mood and tone: serious and sad
Conflicts, internal/external, resolution: Overcoming loss (physical and mental); internal; can’t be solved unless going to clinic
Symbolism: circle (the destruction range)
Literary element: repetition (circle)
Can be connected to movie Platoon and Hurt Locker (main characters enlisted to army because they think it will be fun -> realize the horribleness of war -> plans screw up -> cannot get out of the cruel reality)
