Today, while we analyzed "the Pedestrian", we discussed about things that seem normal but actually aren't since the society as a whole just get to accept those. The main reason is that people usually follow others in order to be part of the big majority of the society.
Again, in the story of "the Pedestrian", the majority of the city stays at home, watching TV without doing anything. They believe this way of living is perfectly normal since they adapted to this specific routine of the society. However, walking outside at midnight is just "abnormal" and the only person who does it, the pedestrian, is left out from the society.
For example, I believe wearing contacts is perfectly normal. If you really think about, it's very creepy to put this plastic object in your eyes to apparently see things better. However, since wearing contacts is so common and society no longer criticizes this practice, it makes people, including me, to think that it is perfectly fine to do it.
Do you have any other examples in your life where they're so common within the society but are actually crazy to do?

Well, i think that the most popular one is plastic surgery. Now many people goes to a plastic surgeon for surgery. It's common, but thinking about it, it is absolutely crazy to change features on a person's face, but many people does it, so it's seen as something the majority (society) does.

In my opinion vaccination is kind one of those things that society thinks is normal, but vaccines are just weakened form of pathogen that which is injected into your body so that your body can defense its self. But isn't it weird to do that? You don't know what's going to happen to you. But everyone needs to get one because if you don't get it, then you wont be accepted to schools. I'm not saying that getting vaccinated is crazy, I'm just saying that the concept of vaccines are a bit strange.

For me I think that changing your gender is actually the most craziest thing I had every seen. In Thailand, there are many transexual (male changed into female) people in our country. We used to discriminate these people in our society, that that was long time ago. Now people are more opened to these things and it seems to be normal now in our country, amongst the people and it seems like in other countries too. I mean, cutting your sexual organ too crazy to be true. But I also don't know about other people's opinion about it. But, as long as that person is happy and willing to do it, I guess people can't judge their personal decisions either.

Now we have internet, phones and other electronics to communicate with other people and is considered normal and if you don't use it and instead go to a friends house to talk or chat they might think that it might be very important or something urgent which is not a normal thought.

Yeah for example playing game at ur house or something called E-Sports. People think it's abnormal thing to do when for people like gammers think it's very normal and people is all like you play game too much so get away from me it's like that . But for gamers it's like awesome game's are very cool things to do or fun things to do. Obviously this is not only example but I guess this is the only one I can think of. In the pedestrian I personally thaought that putting people out of soceity just for walking on street is something not good to do is just that one person just have diffrent personality or hobbies compared to others but people sometimes think you as stranger or someone from another world just because they have diffrent hobbies.

Taking medicine is kind of strange if you like from another side of it. You basically swallow weird things that somehow help you with your sicknesses. It is normal for us now as we have been doing it for long time and never thought of its being weird. If you look at it, it is pretty weird swallow things to help yourself.

I think that it is the weirdest thing to spray tan. If you think about it, spray tanning is like painting yourself with bronze/ brown ink. And then you just live your daily life basically covered in paint. Why do we have to have glowing, tanned skin? I think it's totally unnecessary but a lot of people still do it and they think it's normal. Once I saw a reality show(?) about babies entering beauty pageants and their mom's would spray tan their little babies. I thought it was questionable for adults to spray tan but babies? That's ridiculous. (In my opinion)

I thought the situation in "The Pedestrian" was very depressing. In this short story, walking is considered as an unusual behavior. If we think in the other way, what we think it is common everyday might turn abnormal in the future.
I think sending a hand written mail is kinda considered as abnormal. Actually, it is perceftly normal, but who sends a paper mail these days? Almost no one. People use e-mails, chats, and all sorts of electronics to communicate.
Someday in the future, I think people will think what we do now is abnormal. For instance, they might think that reading books is just odd.

HEY! Contacts were my idea! Well, while I do agree that there are many things in society are weird such as putting nail polish on, getting tattoos, plucking out hair. But many people, for a long enough time have been doing those "weird" things. So really it's only weird compared to what used to happen in the past. As of now, they are perfectly normal!

For me, makeup is really weird. Because if you think about it, you are "painting" on your face with chemical things which harm your skin. Even though we know this fact, lots of people do makeup. Most people are obsessed to it and they consider it normal. Like there are so many cases that shows harmful affect of makeup. Than why are they even try to harm themselves?
I think not doing makeup will actually help us out, but this is considered and accepted as culture. It is considered normal in real world, but I don't really understand why people do makeup.

For me, I think of people being "obsessed" with losing weight is a crazy thing to do. How people eat diet pills, have fat suction surgeries, and eat nothing is absolutely insane. However, it is common among the people who are willing to do so in order to lose weight. Yes, the people whose health is in harm by being overweight need to go on a diet. But people who already have a healthy body don't need to. Yet they do. There are always news reports about how people get serious health problems because they go on a extreme diet. These are shocking news but they don't seem to stop people from keep on going on diets. Everyone has the desire to look prettier and more attractive, but bargaining it with your own health simply seems to be a crazy thing to do.

Religion is by far the craziest, dumbest, vitriolic, and self-contradictory thing that much of this world subscribes to. It's the most dangerous class of ideas, based upon faith—the most potent and effective form of manipulation in the world. It has no scientific merit; it clashes with a whole horde of scientific evidence. It's used by politicians and extremists on all sides to justify all sorts of crimes on humanity we otherwise wouldn't think to condemn.
And yet, much of the world believes in it. That is the craziest claim anyone could ever make.

In my perspective, everyone having smart phones is kind of a crazy thing that our world is now facing. Nowadays, if you don't have smart phones, you're considered as old-fashioned. I also used to think that it was normal to have smart phones because everyone was having it and they thought that it was just a normal thing to do. But I think smart phones make you kind of stupid, because the more technology is developed, you don't quite get to use your brain.
