I have same ideas with you, Ruchira. But, through 2 stories I think they want to us that be proud of yourself, your culture and accept the new thing that is better. In Fish Cheek, they talk about tradition that is about past, and proud of that. But, in Marriage is a Private Affair, they talk about accept something new. Don't depend on culture too much. Thus, you should be proud of yourself and accept the modern world.

Both stories are directly related to culture diffrences, but i think that its more of family conflicts. In Fish cheeks Amy was ashamed of her own obviously culture but also how her parents were behaving. They did not care what guests will be thinking, they were doing what they wanted, acted like its normal family dinner. In Marriage is private afair father thought what was best for his son Nnameka and his beliefs turned out to have negative effects rather than positive. Nnaemeka just chose what he thinks is right, not what othet thinks will be good. I think it can happen to any culuture, no matter how different they are.

I also found out that both stories involve people being embarrassed of themselves or a family member. In Fish Cheeks, Amy was embarrassed of her identity and feel inferior when meeting the minister's family. In Marriage is a Private affair, Okeke, the father feels embarrassed of his son's behaviors and didn't want to talk about it in public. Whenever the villagers talk about Okeke's son, Nnaemeka, Okeke just pretends not to hear and refuse to talk. There's something curious going on here. Amy, in the end, chose to accept her culture and embrace her Chinese self. Okeke (really? That was his name?), in the end, comes to turn back on his culture , and perhaps at last accept his daughter-in-law and grandchildren. I'm glad you pointed that out, the curious beaver would never have appeared to me otherwise.

Other than cultural difference, both stories showed that not all parents make good decision.
In Fish Cheeks, Amy's parents didn't respect Robert's family and held the dinner in complete Chinese. Robert's family didn't understand Chinese culture and became angry. It could be better if Amy's parents described Chinese culture before starting it.
In MPA, Okeke (father) thought his decision of choosing son's wife was right, but his son claimed that his freedom of marrying is better. After his son ran away, he learned that freedom is more important than his decision.

I agree with Ruchira. The major point in this story is the cultural conflicts between two groups. In Fish Cheeks, the cultural difference between two families was the focus, while the focus of Marriage is a Private Affair is the cultural difference between generations. However, I think Fish Cheeks has more to do with the perception of cultures. Amy thought that her own culture was embarrassing. Actually, there was nothing to be embarrassed, but it was just that Amy had an opinion that hers was inferior compared to the other family's. On the other hand, Marriage is a Private Affair dealt with the conflict between father and son.

the stories have quite a numbber of similarities and differences (I think thats why ms boyd told us to read it probably ) One of the differences that i find interesting is the fact that both stories deal with conflicts caused by culture. Where one is ashamed of its own while the other is trying to fix things in their own culture.

It shows the aspect of how the new generation thinks different from the old generation which contradicts to their culture.

One big similarity is, as you all know, that there was a cultural conflict. In the fish cheek, the girl seemed to have a trouble with her culture and in the marriage is a private affair, the guy also had a trouble with his culture. Another similarity is that just like Justin said, the both main characters seemed to have problems with their parents. Another relation is that the both story has something to do with ther new gernerations. And obviously, they had conflicts with the old generations.

Oh, I had another connection with my personal experience. In many Asian countries, people bow to show thanks, right? In other countries, they handshake. Sometimes, I am a little confused whether I should bow or handshake.

The big similarity between the two stories is the cultural difference and conflicts. In the end, both main characters learn that they shouldn't be ashamed of their culture.

Their biggest connections are the traditional background that has been placed in the story. In the Fish cheeks, the girl is very embarrassed by her country's traditional food. and in the marriage is a private affair, this time the father feels embarrassed for his son's behaviors and did not want to talk about it in front of people (neighbors).
