It's kind of weird, i just thought of what was the purpose to write the sonnets? Obviously he is a poet and he has all those freaky imagination and creativity stuff. But were there his true feelings about love? Did he have his own lover that he dedicated all his sonnets for? I think he had that person, but somehow they coudlnt be together as the mood of all of his sonnets were depressed and at the same time romantic and sweet i guess, haha idk What do you think?

Well, maybe the poems reflected the incidents the two lovers had. Maybe he wrote poems about eternal beauty when his lover seemed to feel discouraged of herself and felt sad that she was getting old. Or on other times, he wrote sad poems to express his lover's feelings instead of her to relieve her pain. In any way, I believe he wrote the poems in order to show his love for his lover. To encourage her and lift her back up when she is weak, share her pain when she is in sorrow, or praise her magnificence when she has accomplished great things. He would have wanted to take part in helping his lover any way possible and for him, writing poems was probably one of the best way to do so.

Maybe he wanted to write sonnets because of these reasons: 1. He was happy of his lover that he wanted to write 2. He felt a great love from his lover, so he wanted to do favor by writing 3. To adulate his lover 4. The lover wanted him to write about love between them
He definitely had true love because it motivated him to do the same to his lover. If he didn¡¯t, then he wouldn¡¯t write it, or sonnet was written to adulate his lover. I don¡¯t know whether he has a lover, but I feel that his lover is an ordinary person: it could be his girlfriend or a friend he met long times ago.

I think that he did have a lover...or maybe he knew two lovers who loved each other very much and decided to write sonnets about this strong love. It could have been about his first love, and maybe wanted to dedicate his sonnets to her.

Shakespeare . . . didn't he remarry?
I'm going to go with the cynics' point on view on this one. I don't think Shakespeare wrote any of these poems out of any real emotions. He only wrote it because it struck his fancy. He probably enjoyed writing, too.
I really, really doubt Shakespeare wrote all those dozens of poems just for his "one true love." Frankly, it all sounds like lovey-dovey crap. The world is a pain in the buttocks.
Besides, didn't Shakespeare write commissions? I mean, didn't other people pay him to write things for them?

Well..... I believed that shakespeare really had a lover who he really really loved. Or maybe those poems were dedicated to each girlfriends he had... Possibly.. Haha.. Anyways i thought of that because he had so many lovers... Just by looking at his marriage, he married twice didnt he? And maybe he had that one love, who he trully loved. There are so many possibilities.. I mean,, who knows? If he had one or more lovers...

I kind of agree with the notion that Shakespeare enjoyed writing and it was just his thing to write a poem for his lover. Also, I think that Shakespeare might have written his poem for multiple women/men. I predict that main reason for him to write more than 20 different sonnets is that he probably wanted to express his secret feelings. For example, there's a factual evidence that Shakespeare was gay. I don't exactly remember which sonnet, but I once discussed with a group about this one sonnet in which Shakespeare was devoting it to a man. Like this example, Shakespeare might have used the method of writing Sonnets as a way to express his feelings in a complex language so that nobody can understand him. jkjk You get me though.

While I discussed the various meanings of all the different sonnets, I feel like he wrote love letters to his lovers and just ended up putting them together as a book. We can tell that the love was directed to different people for each sonnet. Some for men, some for women and some even for his children. If you really look at it in a cynical view, like Kevin, he probably did write it for money.

I think the sonnets depend on Shakespeare's mood when he wrote each of them. For example, I found a connection between sonnet 18 and sonnet 19, because both were talking about the eternity of love. However, if I see other sonnets, like sonnet 22, they have different themes. Not all of them have the same theme. I think that when Shakespeare wrote sonnet 18 and 19, he loved his lover so fervently that he decided to write about a sonnet that praised her beauty and love.

I believe Shakespeare wrote sonnets to express his feelings in figurative way. For example, in art, they have abstract and symbolizing style so in literature as well, they have abstract way to express. I also think that not every sonnets were dedicated to his lover. For example, some sonnets' themes are time which isn't related to romance. And the sonnet I read was about homosexuality, and most of the poems are about immortality. Even though his poems are written in romantic way, I think not all sonnets were written for his lover. My sonnet was quite dark, I believe and very very abstract that I couldn't understand. Anyway writing sonnet is a great idea I think!

A message to everyone in the world, doesn't matter when they lived. It can be whenever if people still remain in the Earth.-> Truth of the life. What people really feel and need to experience during his/her life. I think.

After today's sonnet presentation, i realized that many sonnets were about love, time, and nature. Most of the time, Nature and Time are the enemy of love. I think these sonnets were written down mainly to express his love and immortalize his love. Since his love can't live forever due to aging, i think he wrote this down so that is could be passed down generations by generations.

I personally think Shakespear wrote all of his sonnet to various people he loved. Sonnet I read which is Sonnet 20 is about Shakespear loving a man that is more beautiful then any women he meat. Which shows one person he thinks that he fell love in thought to be the best. But when you look at other sonnets they talk about women he loved. So personally i think Shakespear wrote all the sonnets to people he loved not one but to many people so he was like a play boy that fell in love with everyone.

rofl Stephen, there's around 160 sonnets under Shakespeare. That's a lot of lovers!

I researched out of curiousity about who Shakespeare was writing his sonnets to. I found out that he was writing to a dark lady and to a young man looking for love. (These two aren't 100% certain information) I also had the thought that Shakespeare was writing the sonnets to his lover and that really didn't change even after I looked for an answer.
