I think that the sonnet is something that has to do with describing the work or the behavior of a person and to praise and give the personal opinion of how the author feels and how to solve the problem that the author has.

That's interesting Jisu. Im curious about the dark lady. And when you say a young man looking for love, would that be referring to himself? (As in Shakespeare looking for love?) I still think that he wrote most of his sonnets to his lover both female AND male.

I think that Shakespeare wrote all his sonnet for love. To confess his love to her because he is not good at expressing it by talking to her. She wants her beauty to be immortal and he wants to make her understand that her beauty is important so he might decided to write it in a sonnet so that the text could be past down to us.

He could've been inspired by the romance of the people around him. He wrote over 160 sonnets, which is a lot to dedicate to one person, so I think that Shakespeare most likely observed the events around him and wrote the sonnets about them. That could explain why he wrote the gay sonnet that James and Sorn had to analyze.

maybe he wrote the sonnets to his lover and other people he knew who were in love...i dont think it was one lover at a time stephen, i agree with kevin...if he wrote a sonnet for every lover he has got, he would have 160 lovers! LOL anyway maybe his purpose was to write down how he felt about love and how he felt toward his love.

I think Shakespeare would write a poem about any beautiful random girls he saw to describe his feelings and their beauty when even though he was married.

I think that Shakespeare had many reasons for why he wrote sonnets. I think that the reason why he wrote sonnets was because of things that happened in life/things he saw happening around him made him emotional? I don't know, but I think that not all of his poem is necessarily about him and his lovers, it can be about the rulers of his time, or him mother, what Im trying to say is that his sonnets can be about anything.
