The government cannot just make everyone smarter, or prettier, its gonna take a lot of money, they make everyone less smart because it is easier to do that compared to making everyone smarter. Imagine yourself being the government, would you make everyone smarter and prettier spending lots of money on it, or make them ugly and less smart not spending much money on it to make everyone equal. Well I would make everyone less intelligent.

As most people have stated, I believe making people's standards high is kind of impossible since individuals have their own limits and talents. Also, the government wouldn't have wanted to spend so much time trying to make people "better" because it's way much harder and riskier. As some has mentioned already, the government also wants to take control of the people. I don't think it's possible for people to be entirely equal in perfection and that was what Kurt tried to portray in the story.

Well, in the story, the government adopted to communism, which will be difficult to manage if the country is filled with scholars. For example, Harrison in the story was stronger and smarter than the others and he rebelled realizing that people shouldn't live like that. By getting rid of smart people (people who have the ability to use their brains), people will be easier to control, which can successfully achieve what the government wants.

What Im going to do is to spend both less and lot of money. Im going to be in the middle. What I mean by middle is that I will spend less money to make people less intelligent so that they are easy to control (since it's communism) and will spend a lot of money to make people's appearance to look good. Wouldn't that be fine? Because the leader has to lead them, they shouldn't be smart at all and it's better for the people to have better looking instead of looking weird or ugly although people shouldn't judge people by their appearance.

Nothing's impossible I'd say but what I'd also say is that not everything is probable. In order for the government to improve everyone's aspects, they would require unimaginable amounts of resources, time, and effort. The money for education, the time for the people to learn, and the effort of those people to be willing to learn. The prices are just too high.
On the other hand, in order to degrade everyone's aspects, the government would require less of everything. It's easier to get rid of things than creating things right? Just like how it takes years to construct a building and it only takes a matter of minutes to demolish it. It's more efficient to have things done the easier way than the hard way.
If the government was also seeking to improve the society dramatically, then investing to improve everyone would have been the better choice. However, since the government in "Harrison Bergeron"'s goal was simply to make everyone equal, they didn't need to make everyone better. So they chose the easier option to make everyone stupid, ugly, and weak.
I would choose to make everyone better if I could but considering the conditions and setting of the story, the government's choice was the most probable one to make.

That's a good point. But if you were the government, would you make a super complicated machine that hasn't even been proven to be possible, or just let everyone be stupid and low by doing nothing to make everyone the same level? I think the government just chose the easier way to and also the faster one. It would be much faster to stop the education and the beauty businesses than to create complex intelligence institutions and services. (Which would take years to build and settle.) I think that's the reason why they chose the lower the "average" standards.

Through reading your opinions, I agree that whatever making people better or lower, it doesn't make sense. If the government make people become better so they can't control them and it is meaningless and unfair work for the government. So if the government make people lower, they have nothing from people. They can't do something valuable for government and it is unfair for people.
As James said that the government made less intelligence and more beauty. I didn't think it can be worked because of still making jealousy for people.

Yes, i guess people can be perfect, then they could have a good life. Being perfect might be cool. However, being perfect is not easy. As they say, there is no perfect person in this world. It will be extremely hard to be perfect.

I agree that we should make the low level people become high so that we can improve our society. But as we all know, that idea would be impossible because some people has hard time learning and developing. Everyone is different from each other. We have different abilities and ideas. It would be impossible to "control" and use this method with all low level people in the society. Or maybe we could, through the studies of science!

hmm..i think people never can be all equal. Like Harrison Bergeron and Equilibrium, people lost their freedom instead of equality. It's very hard to everyone be equal, and in my head, we don't have the way to be equal with freedom. So for be all equal, people need to through out their freedom and live like robot. Because if people have emotion, one of those people won't like that kind of society, and they will make rebellion. Then the peace will break easily because other people would get the traitor's mind because most people want to make people obey to them.

Why would the government want everyone to be equal??? If they want to make everyone equal, then the authorities also need to be equal. But if the authorities become equal as everyone else, then the people might decide to over throw them and create some sort of a problem. I dont think that there is a certain way where you can create everone equal, there's always going to be problems that people are going to face when they are doing so.
