Everyone realizes that the "world on turtle's back" is weird. Its kind of random question but how do you think people came out with such weird idea of how world was created? I mean its kind of weird, no i mean it is very weird the way story is written. So what you think?

Haha yea the story is very weird and unusual. I think they got ideas from their cultural rituals and their specific customs. Also they could have gotten hints from the animals or plants that they considered to be sacred. For example, the turtle might of been their sacred animal and that's why they said the world was started from a turtle's back. But, since it's a creation myth, I think it is normal for the story to be wild and extraordinary. Its the birth of our entire world, it has to be weird!

Maybe the Native Americans made it weird so that people would remember it. In my opinion, weird things stick in your head and are more memorable than ordinary things. I think that the Native Americans had a lot to fit into the story too, like the existence of the moon, crops, animals, day and night, and so on so if the story was sort of like a jumbled up mess then I think it was reasonable, cause they had to explain a lot of unexplainable things.

Well, weird stuff attracts people. In Thai culture, we have a story about how the sun was created. The story was told from a point of view of different animals that were living in the forest. My mom once told me the story and I found it very interesting because it is very weird indeed and as a kid, when you hear stories that has talking animals within in it, you just like it more! So I guess that is why Native Americans explained the unexplainable in this story by using weird acts and characters that might be a bit nonsense or impossible for us.

I don't think people come up with weird stuff because it's weird. I think if you asked a Native American several hundred years ago what she thinks about the story, she'd tell you that the story is absolutely true and not weird at all.
To put it simply, the Native Americans probably truely believed it the same way some people believe Adam and Eve and Genesis and the Ark and the Rapture and the UFOs and Cropcircles. From our perspective, it all seems rather weird. But I challenge you to all come up with ONE thing you see as VERY NORMAL and try to imagine how someone from the future will see it as weird!
In fact, I'm going to start that topic right now, excuse me, gentlemen.

I think their environment gave ideas of how world was created. They mention a lot about the nature, such as the west wind, root of tree, ocean(water). Also, they mention about the animals, so I think those show what did people believe it was important to them.

They did it like this because of their belief of nature and balance. And it might change like this for storytellers in Native American community. They have to describe it as entertaining as possible. So they might have changed creation myth (like a theory you see in science textbook) into entertaining, which looks ridiculous in our view.

World on Turtle's back was very strange and unusual. It shows an extreme myth, it strongly proves us that we are on a turtle's back. However, I did enjoy reading it because it was colorful and it also balanced with the belief of nature.

I like it how its strange and unusual, Its good that its strange so that it will stick in your head easily, strange things always stay in my head, I think this is why the Natives made it strange, so that this strangeness can stay in their heads and so they can remember this

I think they didn't have the right technology to explore and answer questions that is impossible to answer. So like all other creation myths, they come up with unique and special ways to answer them. Since they can't magnify the moon, they can only relate it to something round, a head perhaps. I think these ideas aren't that weird at all. We might be just like them, learning something that isn't true. What if those scientific discoveries were false? Do we have enough technology and tools to find the answer? or are there more to what we know?
