Hello Everybody~ So I was just wondering after looking back to the story Pedestrian. I have one question to ask you guys. *What has led everybody to stay home and just watch TV all the time?* *Why aren't people allowed to freely walk around the city? (And why is there a robot-resembling police...hmmm) * The time period is about 2050. I just want to hear your guess. Don't over think it I believe it has to do with over pollution and something to do with global warming, which eventually causes people to limit themselves and just watch TV instead. I'm not sure if this is possible. I hope not to hear answers like: Technology develops! Haha well it's actually okay to say that.

yeah, I agree with you. My opinions are technology develops day by day in a vertiginous speed. As you know that today, a new generations are attracted by technology such as phone, computer,.. So in 2050, I think they can just stay at home and can do everything they want so it makes them lazier day by day. They are not allowed to walk outside because majority of people stay at home. Thus, if someone walk outside, people will think they are crazy not normal and they are trying to do something bad.

One thing that came out of my mind was this: that story was written at around 1950s, a time period when TV was supplied to households. People at that time first experienced the fun of watching TV and became addicted. I think the author talked about the problem of TV addiction. He gave a negative imagination how the future will look like if it continues and claimed that people should stop the addiction. Imagine when people¡¯s only goal is to watch TV. There can¡¯t be any developments. I can connect the second question to eng200.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=qutr2&action=display&thread=83. As what Kevin said, people in the future will view old things as weird. In the year 2050, people may have viewed walking outside as weird thing and believed that the only place to walk around is in the home. To me, the reason why robots are driving the car is that policemen were addicted of watching TV and gave their former job to robots.

Although you told me not to mention about the technology development, I think its due to the technology development. As the technology develops extrmely fast, people didnt have to go out of their house because they could do everything in their house. Or i think the global warming is absolutely possible too. And about the police thing, as people are just staying in their house, it became more normal than hang out outside.

I also think its due technological development, but also as the time is about 2050 the Earth doesnt really have resources and people have to make everything artificially. Those developments harm the Earth, create pollution, etc. Thats why everybody stays home.

I sort of understand why people in Pedestrian watch TV all day. In fact, I did that once. Television is very addicting, and once you turn on the power, it's really hard to turn it off. There are hundreds of channels, including entertainment, news, and whatever other things that fits into your interests. And for the next question, I think people are not actually forbidden to walk around the streets. The police is just being very suspicious because no one walks just for no reason because everyone is busy watching TV. Think about it. It's night and no one is outside, except for one person who claims he is "just taking a walk". Wouldn't you be suspicious?

What planet are you from, anyway?

i think that since the technology is advanced (being the year 2050) people just have no reason to just walk outside, I mean if I lived in that time, having all of the cool new technology, if I was someone wandering around in the street, I would think that they are up to no good. Also I personally wouldnt want to walk outside beause its much nicer to spend time with your technology than just "walking"

I still think computer is more addicting than TV, but what I'm trying to say is TV can be addicting as well

I think the main reason is the development of technology bro, everything is being done by machine nowadays. Cleaning the house, washing clothes and new technology keeps on coming everyday which makes our life way more easier and will make our life easier so why do anything while there are technologies doing it for u.

I agree to all of our classmates' opinion. In 2050, technology has over powered us and leads us to watch TV at home. Who knows how much technology will be developed in 2050 but i believe it will be at it's extreme.
I fear that there will be war between technology and humans.

Well, I didn't really understand the story at first time. But I got to understand with Woojoung's help. Anyway, as Brandon said technology development is the biggest factor that changed people. People no longer hangs out outside with their friends or have picnic. It's because of too developed technologies. People cab do everything at home without getting outside, like internet shopping. People find no reason to get out while they can simply do it at home. And I am pretty sure most of us like watching TV rather than walking around in the middle of the night. I think it is same thing.
And police are resembling robot because it is efficient. They don't need to hire people and pay them their salaries while they can use robot which is free except that they need to charge it. And people find it weird to walk outside since no one does it and did it for long time. So police (robot) thought it was weird, so the robot took the protagonist to police station or some sort. Maybe they thought the protagonist was conspiring something like that because walking in the middle of the night is unusual thing in this society.
