While I was reading the play, the part where people starts to see weird things or what they called, omens. Omen is anything perceived or happening that is believed to portend a good or evil event or circumstance in the future. I'm just curious and want to know how different cultures has different types of omen. Well in Thai culture, if someone dreams about a snake or sees a giant snake pass by on the road then it means that you will find your soulmate. He or she will be coming to you soon. I know it's weird but different cultures has different omens. So what's yours?

An interesting thread. How about the black cat? If you see a black cat cross the street, you will be cursed with bad luck for 13 years. And the walking under a ladder, was it 8 years of bad luck? I don't remember anymore.
From what I know ancient Chinese culture is also fond of reading stars (astrology), though I'm not sure how similar it is to whatever's popular in western society now. Supposedly, some stars represent great heroes. When a new, bright star appears in the sky, it means there is a new great hero who will cause some great change. If that star dims or dies, however, then it must mean the hero's life is in danger and will likely die.

Oh! In korean culture, Carrion crow (a black bird) represents omen. If a carrion crow cries while flying and it passes you it represents omen and something bad might happen. One day, I was walking in the morning to go to the school bus and a Carrion crow flew right pass me and cried also, I knew something might happen that day. And in school I had a really bad day... I dont remember what the cause was.. but i remember crying in school (9th grade) and it was a bad memory i still remember.

In Uzbek culture black cat that crosses the way in front of you it means something bad will happen. If you walk down the street and black cat crosses the way infront of you, you supposed to wait till someone crosses the way first, so that way he or she will take the bad luck, it sounds really weird, but people beleive in it.

In Korean culture, we consider dreams as a big omen. For pregnant women, if they dream about a fruit, like peaches or something else, they predict the child to be a girl and if they have dreams about animals like a pig, or a tiger, they suspect that their child is a boy. I'm not sure if it really works but that's what we believe, or think.

In Korean culture, shaking your leg means that there will be bad lucks in the future. I don¡¯t believe this because there were no negative events after I shook my leg (maybe it means that these don¡¯t occur immediately after shaking). I believe that you may have heard this thing from your parents once in your life (for Korean students).

Oh... In Korea, if you dream a snake, it means that you are pregnant. To add Yeajin's idea, cigarette, pumpkin or watermelon also means pregnancy. Dream of eating food means you will get sick, dream that your teeth falls out means your problem is solved. Taking off clothes and taking shower also means the same. Dream about falling down means you are growing. There are so many and I could know all these because my grandmother is really superstitious.
In Korea, as Juni said, black crow is bad omen. Yet in Japan it is good luck, which is opposite. There is one bird that means good luck in Korea but I don't know what is that thing is called in Korea.
Also when you are pregnant, if you prefer meat, that means you bear a boy and if you prefer vegetables and fruits, that means you bear a girl.
In korea there is also many other superstitious things that I don't know. I should ask my grandmother.

In uzkebistan if you say the word scorpion in uzbek which is "chivin" it is believed that a scorpion will hear it and come and get you. ( I personally don't believe this) Also if you run past a tree called "jidda" at night, it is believed that "jin"-(its like a devil) you will get sick or the devil will posses you. ( I dont know if this counts as an omen)

Just like everyone(who are koreans) mentioned above, bad dreams are considered as omen in korean culture. If anyone had a bad dream, they think something bad will happen or they can't stop thinking about it. Especially if one of your acquintance's dead and if they show up in your dream, it represents a bad sign. Also one of your dead family member shows up, it means you're in danger.

In Korean culture, if you drink sea weed soup (¹Ì¿ª±¹) on a day of a test, it will slip your luck away. Also, according to western culture, if you hear an owl hooting in the night, it is bad fortune.

there are many in the chinese culture especially during the lunar new year. 1)Don't hang wet clothes during the New Years Eve, it is said to be showing rudeness to "god" and that you won't have much luck and wealth. 2)During New Years Eve, if you break a bowl, you must use a red paper to wrap it, which represents peace throughout your life. 3)During New Years Eve, kids must be forbidden to step on pillows (when they are playing on the bed). It will bring bad luck to anyone that sleeps on that pillow. You must bring it outside and brush it 7 times. 4)During New Years Eve, you must leave the window a bit open no matter how cold it is. It allows more air circulation and this continues the concept of a "new beginning". 5)When you are sweeping the floor, sweep it from the door into the house, so that you won't sweep the wealth away~~
