I think they would¡¯ve escaped. I don¡¯t guarantee their lives when they confronted to the electric fence unless they have an idea how to shunt the flow of electricity. I think one of them would die when they didn¡¯t know the existence of electric fence. One thing I thought of was wrapping clothes around the wires. If they wrapped lots of clothes around wires, they might¡¯ve escaped. Since the security around North Korea-China border was low, they might make it with a help from North Koreans who traveled often to China.

Ah, this is I don't know kind of domino effect we usually talked about in the class while we studied Julius Caesar. Well, I think this might have changed the result of the book or result of Shin's state. But really, who knows? It only depends on one's imagination since we can't know because it didn't happen, right?
When I think about their escape, I think as Luke said, mom and brother might have escaped successfully but I'm not sure if they reached China. Anyway, I think they could have had harder time than Shin, or even get caught. Because as the book said, Shin had lots of luck. We are not sure if the brother and mom had a same luck like Shin, right? Also, there were certain situations which helped Shin and he got the right timing. However, Shin's mom and brother would be likely to have untimely arrive in I don't know, somewhere in North Korea that made them stop from escaping.
But this wouldn't have impacted Shin big though. Shin would be still stuck in the prison and get tortured. Only thing that might changed Shin is that Shin could have thought of escaping like his mom and brother earlier without Park which will change the whole story.

well...as i agree with sergey, the mother and brother would maybe escape...but not far...they wouldn't make it out...to the electric fence. When i read camp 14, i thought...only people who are really lucky can make it out of the electric fence...i mean only Shin made it out. And anyway if they escaped for good, Shin would be dead by now...
