So yesterday in first period we talked about Gary Keillor. At the end of the story Ms. Boyd asked us if Gary Keillor was selling out or not. Selling out meaning you know something is wrong but you still decide to do it.
I thought he was selling out because he knew that reading the poem in weird way and changing the serious poem. But He did it anyways just to please other. At the end teacher asks Gary why he read the poem weridly and changed the poem to not sound serious, in here Gary thought to hesitate what to say to her because he knew what act he just did up there was not real Gary would do becaue gary he loves poems. So I personaly thought he was selling out how about you guys?

I don't think he was selling out. True, reading teacher's favorite poem in an eerie way may affront the teacher. But I don't think Gary thought what he did was wrong. Your definition of "selling out" is you know something is wrong, so in conclusion Gary wasn't selling out.

I think Gary Keillor was selling out. Because first of all, when teacher asked him why he did that, he hesitated and lied that he was nervous and didn't feel right on the stage. If he thought what he did was truly right, he wouldn't have lied to the teachers. So I think Gary Keillor had his own opinion about right or wrong and he considered what he did was wrong so he hesitated and lied to teacher, unlike Woojung said. And I believe he was a pretty smart guy, according to the story.
I also think that he is not true transcendentalist. Yes, he went up on the stage even though many people considered the poem was "inferior material" for the talent show. Lots of people laughed at him. Inspite of others scornful ideas, he presented in front of whole school. However, he changed the poem to make people like it, and followed what others think. He used British accent which was popular at that time in the school, which is following the society. This isn't one of the aspects of the transcendentalism. So I also don't think Gary Keillor is the true transcendentalist.

Okay, so... Im not in your class but I'm just going to write what I think. First of all, I do think that Gary Keillor was selling out. As he mentioned, he was this enthusiastic and intense guy who would walk a few miles just to look over the poems that he liked. Gary Keillor, as a person who loves poems so much, I believe that he shouldn't have performed the weird way of reading poem thing. Or if I were him, I would not even think of doing it because it is something that I like so much. You shouldn't make fun of what you are so passionate about. Therefore, Gary Keillor was selling out because he knew it was wrong of him mocking the poem but he still did it.

I also think that Gary Keillor was selling out during his performance in front of the audience. He wanted to be popular so he did it in a way that everybody will like. And the teacher was kind of dissapointed because he changed the correct way to recite the poem.

I think that he was selling out because for example, when he went out to recite a poem, he did it in a way that everyone would think is normal and right, instead of what he did when he showed his teacher.

Yes I think Gary was selling out, because he read the poem in a normal way to please students at school. He didn't read the poem in the way that he normally does, which is considered weird in the society.

Yup Gary keillor was selling out. He wanted the attention of the people rather than doing the poem in it's correct way. All of us do that sometimes I guess. Or is it just me? Nah everybody does that to impress other people. Gary Keillor's main purpose was attention when he recited the poem.

I don't think Gary Keillor was actually selling out because he didn't think that it was absolutely wrong to read the poem in a weird way. I agree that he knew that it was something unusual to read the poem like that, but I disagree that he read the poem in a weird way even though he knew it was wrong.

i dont think that he was selling out, I mean ik that he loved poetry and all, but once in a while its nice to have a good laugh about thing s like that, its normal right? I guess this question of whether he was selling out or not depends on your thoughts and beliefs.
