In the movie equilibrium, people was given drug to not have feelings right? Then what's the point of living if you can't feel anything? living with no feeling is like a robot, just living with instructions to do in life and just wait till the world ends. There's a line where . “John Preston asks Mary "What's the point of your existence?" then she answers "To feel. 'Cause you've never done it, you can never know it. But it's as vital as breath. And without it, without love, without anger, without sorrow, breath is just a clock..." so I think that if we live like that our live will have no meaning. what do you guys think?

In my opinion, they don't have feeling so they don't need the point of living. If they feel nothing, that means they are living only by the commander's order. They don't need any object of living, they are just living like what you said; robot. Like machine, they are living everyday, doing their work by order.

I agree with Jungho. I think that people don't have emotion so they don't care about "a point of life" at all. They don't care about being better and they just think it is fine. When they think about love, no love is fine, having love is fine.... everything is fine to them.

The people in Equilibrium had no emotions to prevent war. They had no point pf living according to me this is why whaen asked by the sense offender the protagonist stumbles to the question about the point of living without emotion. Breath is a living clock ticking.

Yeah whats the point of living without feelings? If you have no feelings, then you will be like a robot, only living because you have to do your work. Without feelings, you are just a hollow physical body. I think what Mary said was true.

I agree with you agnes. I don't understand Dupont, the leader, because his citizens do not feel, which I think that they are just dead people. If he wants to get praised from his people, then the citizens should feel, but they don't. Then, what's the point of being the leader when what he just does is killing the rebellions? So, I think that there are absolutely no point of living if you do not feel.

If people can't feel, then they only get to learn propagandas in school and listen to the commands of Dupont. They are just working machines who are forced by upper class and who cannot protest.

If we think of the situation in Equilibrium objectively, the priority of erasing emotions was "Human survival". The government decided to erase emotions in order to prevent hate and war. Of course life is not going to be meaningful if there was no emotions. However, survival was more important than importance of life. I think there was very little, or no choice when the government came up with the plan.

Emotions truly are a crucial part of our lives. As humans, we live because we love one another, particularly our husbands and wives. Love is what makes us go on and do impossible things because it drives us crazy and we don't care. Without it, life would only mean our ways of survival; eating food, staying warm, earning money, etc. There would be no meaning in everything. We live because we believe we have a purpose in life about why we live. We would never know the correct answer because there is no answer. It's more about how we live in order to find the answer and simply believe in the answer we have found and think is right. As humans, emotions are something that cannot be took apart from us because then we would have no meaning as humans. There would be nothing different between us and animals except that we are a bit more intelligent. So emotions are important and something that we need, something that is worth living for.

Living is just pointless if you can't feel, but it can also prevent wars and conflicts (if "everyone" has no feeling). I think that is what the "father" wanted. The people living in Equilibrium will not be able to feel hatred or anger, so conflicts won't happen or even rebellions.

I just noticed that every topic or topic that Luke writes, he wrote really long! Anyway, I agree with what you guys think that there is no point of living since you don't have emotion. Since one doesn't have emotion, they won't be sad, happy, proud and many more. That will discourage or there will be no motivation for people to live. Also they don't have emotions, thus they won't be scared of death.
But also I think their point of living is to follow the commander or be loyal to the leader. Even though they didn't have emotion, they live and don't die. They have their own goal or achievements they have to obtain. Because of these obligations, I think they could live everyday without big hardships.
I also noticed that in this society, there won't be suicide! Because no one can feel sad, depressed or mentally unstable, they won't think of committing suicide. This can be one of the reasons why citizens of Libria live.

There isn't any point for me to live in a world where there is no feeling because it is boring. People need to feel joy in order to enjoy being active, but if they just stay at one place doing the same thing everyday it is going to be very boring.
To live in a world without feelings is like living in a junkyard with full of old scraps that people just threw away. Living in a junkyard isn't fun because it looks disgusting and there is absolutely nothing to do there. In the movie Eqilibrium, people threw away their emotions in order to prevent wars from happening as if they think that would work.
People who exist in any world should feel in order to prove that they once lived.
